Bee Gees - Stayin' Alive

This plays over the opening credits of the 1977 movie Saturday Night Fever while John Travolta struts through the streets of New York City. The movie has come to represent the Disco era, and has made this the song most associated with Disco. The Bee Gees had been singing in a high-falsetto style since their 1975 hit "Jive Talkin'," which was also on the soundtrack, but they were very popular as a vocal harmony group in the late '60s and early '70s. Their contributions to Saturday Night Fever brought them huge success, but marked them as Disco singers.

In a 1989 interview with Q magazine, they talked about this stigma and why they didn't deserve it. "We were not disco," Robin Gibb said. "People who emulated us were disco. All you heard on the radio was that dooo! dooo! syn-drum sound. We never had a syn-drum on one of our records!"

Train - Save Me, San Francisco

This is the title track from California rock band Train's fifth studio album. It was their first release for nearly four years. Lead guitarist Jimmy Stafford told Billboard magazine that he considers Save Me San Francisco, "a comeback record... It's kind of like we're re-introducing the band to everybody. We have to go out there and win back our core fans and also expand our audience with new fans." He added: "We just wanted to get back to our roots on this record. We wanted to do things a little more stripped-down like our first album and get back to the whole San Francisco vibe, which is were the band originally came from. And it's working out great. We've got the same energy and excitement that we had on the first album. Everybody's just on the same page and really excited."

Stafford told The Huffington Post: "When I heard Pat's demo of 'Save Me, San Francisco,' I really got goose bumps, I felt like it was a really impressive hit song. I love the chorus so much, you know, with that gospel singer vibe. It had a Stones attitude, like a loose kind of f--- off rock song. Lyrically, it's a good pop song, but as a whole, it has a good groove and is really fun to play."

 

 

Coldplay - Every Teardrop Is A Waterfall

Chris Martin was inspired to write the upbeat song after hearing the dance track "Ritmo de la Noche" by Lorca during a nightclub scene in Javier Bardem's film Biutiful. The track is based on "I Go To Rio," hence Allen and Anderson credits as writers on this tune.
 

Speaking to Mojo magazine Martin explained: "There's a scene (in Biutful) where he walks through a club, and I'm thinking, 'This is the best chord sequence I've ever heard! I've got to find out what it is and make a song out of it!' So I traced it back… I used those two chords and got in touch with his people. It felt very fresh - we'd never sounded like that before."

Chris Martin explained the song's meaning in an interview with Music Week: "The central theme of the record – 'Paradise' is kind of about this as well – is trying to turn bad things into good things somehow. We as a band have been through some funny incidents in terms of people being aggressive towards us or whatever. And a lot of the record is fuelled by a kind of fire which comes from turning that negativity into positivity. And I think everyone in their life has something like that."

Firkin - Firkinful of Beer

Firkin is a Hungarian band playing Irish folk music, their style is similar to Flogging Molly's. Since 2008, they have played more than 400 concerts in 11 countries (CAN, FR, CH, BE, GER, ITA, AUT, CZ, SK, RO, HUN). 

My Morning Jacket - Circuital

Jim James explained the song's meaning to UK newspaper The Sun: "It's about life's circular nature... How we are all born of this crazy void that nobody can really describe or put a name to. Even though we try with religion and new age philosophy, no one really knows for sure.

We are born and we travel around life's 'circuit' then we all complete the circle and return back to the same void from where we came to pass on to something different."

AWOLNATION - Sail

Speaking to Toronto.com, Bruno said the song was initially a diversion that took him less than an hour to record. "That was written at a time where I didn't know what direction I wanted to go," he said. "I was sitting at the studio trying to make these little pop songs for aspiring pop artists for chump change, [with] barely enough money to buy a bean and cheese burrito."

So, he decided to try to come up with something that was quirky and unusual. "I came up with the string section part at the beginning, and the song just came to me," Bruno explained. "I recorded the strings, the beat and the synth — all within 45 minutes. My engineer went down the street to get some sodas for us, and by the time he got back, I'd sung the lyrics and it was done. It happened so quickly it was almost an accident."

Anna And The Barbies - Gombóc

A great love song from one of the most popular Hungarian alternative bands. The title means "dumpling". :)

Meat Loaf - Bat Out Of Hell

Producer Todd Rundgren told Mojo magazine February 2009 of Bruce Springsteen's influence on the Bat Out of Hell album. Said Rundgren: "Jim Steinman still denies that record has anything to do with Springsteen. But I saw it as a spoof. You take all the trademarks - over long songs, teenage angst, handsome loner- and turn them upside down. So we made these epic songs, full of the silly puns that Steinman loves. If Bruce Springsteen can take it over the top, Meat Loaf can take it five storeys higher than that - and at the same time, he's this big, sweaty, unappealing character. Yet we out-Springsteened Springsteen. He's never had a record that sold like Bat Out of Hell, and I didn't think that anyone would ever catch on to it. I thought it would be just a cult thing. The royalties from that album enabled me to follow my own path for a long time after that."

Saving Abel - Stupid Girl (Only In Hollywood)

Frontman Jared Weeks explained the meaning of the song in an interview with Shauna O'Donnell on the internet radio station MUEN Talk: "(Producer) Skidd Mills and I wrote that in the studio. We wrote it two days after the Grammy's this year. We were fortunate enough to get to go and be a part of the experience. Two days later we were in the studio and I was reading a quote by Marilyn Monroe that stated 'A wise girl always kisses before she's kissed, leaves before she's left and forgets before she's forgotten.' To me, that says a lot about her because you know she wasn't stupid, she knew what was going on. The message of the song is about one of those Hollywood girls trying to use everybody and work her way up the ladder. It's a simple song and it says a lot. I'm a big Marilyn fan, so I wanted to get her involved in my music somehow. We had the Hollywood theme going in our heads still, so we were excited about writing it. It was one of the last songs on the record that we wrote which ended up being the first single. It was the same with 'Addicted.' We are hoping it follows the same format."

Theory Of A Deadman - Bitch Came Back

In 2010 Tyler Connolly and his wife, the Canadian actress Christine Danielle, divorced. This song is about the ending of their relationship. He told Hard Rock Reviews: "The song on the record that stemmed from that break up is 'The Bitch Came Back.' The moral is, the bitch came back, so it's self explanatory there but there's a lot of people that relate to that song. I actually did an interview with a woman the other day and she said 'I don't think women are going to like these songs.' So I told her, 'I think you're wrong.' If you write a book about women, guys aren't going to buy it but music is so open that they can relate to it no matter what."

 

Meat Loaf - Paradise By The Dashboard Light

Meat Loaf convinced his record label to let him make a video for this song, which was a simple live performance clip, but very effective. Loaf was an established actor and brought his theatrical flair to the video. He also found a clever way to get it seen in the pre-MTV era: he convinced movie theaters to show it before midnight screenings of The Rocky Horror Picture Show, a film he starred in and was becoming a cult classic. When MTV launched in 1981, they favored rock videos, but had very few available, especially by American acts, so they put "Paradise" in rotation, which gave the Bat Out of Hell album another bump in sales.

Matthew Morrison - Summer Rain

Morrison admitted in an interview with PopEater that the song is quite a leap from his Glee character: "It's kind of a jump. It's talking about having sex on a roof," he said. "It was the first song I wrote for this album, and it was a story that I really wanted to tell. For me, it's about being young and in love in New York City and kind of appreciating a moment, a memory burn that's been in my head. It's kind of beautiful to put it out there in a song."

Suede - To The Birds

This is a b-side from Suede's first single released in 1992. This is the last Suede song on my blog for a while, I'll be going back to a little bit more recent music. :)

Suede - So Young

The video for the song was directed by Andy Crabb and David Lewis, who later went on to direct a series of backdrop films for Suede as well as the live tour film Introducing The Band and features children from the Kent coastal town of Whitstable. Originally intended to have no footage of the band members, a shoot was then arranged at the instigation of the record company who insisted that the band appear.

Suede - Leaving

This is a great B-Side from the single of Everything Will Flow from 1999.

Iron Maiden - Dance Of Death

According to guitarist Janick Gers, the song was inspired by the final scene of Ingmar Bergman's The Seventh Seal, at the end of which "these figures on the horizon start doing a little jig, which is the dance of death." Gers wrote most of the music and explained the concept to Steve Harris, who wrote the lyrics and most of the melodies.

Suede - She's In Fashion

"She's in Fashion" was Suede's biggest radio hit. "She's in Fashion" has been described as 'the most summery-sounding pop song Suede have recorded,' yet its light feel disguises what proved to be months of heavy production work, several re-recordings and a lot of experimentation. According to Osborne, the recording process took six months and several studios were used. "It happens quite often that you go on a journey, attempt various things and end up preferring the first thing you did. 'Fashion' was a song that we started in the first week of recording -- but we didn't finish it until the very last week!"

Suede - Stay Together

Suede were formed in 1989 by Brett Anderson, the year he lost his mother to cancer and guitarist and co-songwriter Bernard Butler was soon recruited via an advert in Melody Maker. By 1994 there were growing tensions between the pair and Suede released this tale of two suburban lovers united in narcotic nihilism as a stopgap single, whilst Butler's father was dying of cancer. Anderson's lyric was inspired by vivid childhood memories of nuclear war, while Butler conceived a tumultuous and multi-tiered ballad lasting over seven minutes. "I was desperate to do something emotional and strung out, Butler told Mojo June 2011, who admits he was constantly stoned on weed during that period. "I'd seen all these tragic characters around the band, and I felt the world had become a nasty place. Brett had retreated. Probably because of what had happened to his mum, he didn't want to connect to me."

Suede - The Wild Ones

Immersed in lyric writing, frontman Brett Anderson spent hours in London's Highgate library, looking through biographies of old film stars. This ballad was named after the 1953 Marlon Brando outlaw biker film, The Wild One.

Lyrically, Anderson's 17-year-old girlfriend, Anick, inspired this ode to a relationship being slowly lost. The Dog Man Star tracks "The Asphalt World" and "Black or Blue" were also written about his teenage beau. "Our relationship was fiery and fractured," he recalled to Mojo, "the kind you have when you're young."

 

 

Iron Maiden - Fear Of The Dark

Kerrang! magazine, while interviewing singer Bruce Dickinson, quoted the Iron Maiden biography Run To The Hills, in which Steve Harris professed that Bruce "made very little effort" on the Fear of the Dark Tour. Bruce's response: "I've got my version of events and he's got his. It all comes down to how you see the world. For Steve, Maiden's more important than anything. To me, there are some things that are more important than the band I'm in. I didn't know it was going to be that much of a big deal when I left, but as soon as I walked out onstage and looked at the audience I thought 'Sh**! If I run around grinning like a fool, the audience is going to think, "What a wanker! If he's so happy, why is he leaving?".' And if I wander around looking miserable as sin, they'll wonder why they paid £20 for a ticket to see this tosser. I was stuffed. Some nights the audience was hostile. It was like doing a gig at a wake! Some nights I enjoyed it, but on others I was thinking, 'I wish I wasn't here!'. The moment I left Maiden I made a deal with myself that I wouldn't do anything that I didn't believe in ever again. Steve and myself always used to clash. He wanted to fire me after the first month of the 'Number Of The Beast' tour - because I kept getting in his way onstage! I had an extra six inches added to the base of my microphone stand so I could trip the bastard up! I got fed up of him standing in front of me when I was singing. I got all these chips in my teeth where he used to elbow me. After a gig in Newcastle in '82 we were going to go outside, sleeves rolled up. But we learned to live with each other. And if Steve hadn't had that personality, Maiden would never have existed."

Suede - Europe Is Our Playground

Coming Up is the third album by Sude, released in 1996. A commercial and critical success, Coming Up was the album that introduced Suede to a worldwide audience, in places such as Europe, Canada and Asia. Europe is Our Playground is a B-side of one of the singles from this album.

Green Day - American Idiot

Billie Joe Armstrong was inspired to write this after hearing a jingoistic Lynyrd Skynyrd song being played on his car radio, whilst driving to the studio. He told Q magazine May 2009: "It was like, I'm proud to be a redneck and I was like, Oh my God, why would you be proud of something like that? This is exactly what I'm against. When he got to the studio, Armstrong furiously penned this song. He said: "I looked at the guys like, Do you mind that I'm saying this? And they were like, No, we agree with you. And it started the ball rolling."

Suede - Trash

Various meanings have been given to the song, but the main themes seem to be about 'outsiders', being different but living well with it. Anderson also described it as the soundtrack to his life, saying "It's about believing in the romance of the everyday." In an interview in late 2009, for the SkyArts' Songbook series, Anderson said about the song:
"I actually wrote it about the band Suede. It's a celebration of the band, but by extension, it's a celebration of the fans as well. And it was a kind of a song written about us, as a gang, it was written about the values we stood for. And even though it sounds like a love song, it was actually about the idea of the identity of the band, and what they stood for."

Suede - Attitude

Some critics viewed the single as an improvement from the group's 2002 album A New Morning, which was considered to be a disappointing album. John Murphy of MusicOMH wrote that "...'Attitude' is one of their best tunes for years." Adding that it's "...the perfect reminder as to why Suede were one of the most intriguing bands of the '90s"
A video was made for "Attitude". The video was directed by Lindy Heymann, and features actor John Hurt performing the song in drag.

Suede - Obsessions

Though the single was another disappointment on the charts, reaching only 29 on the UK singles chart, the song is considered a favourite from this era among fans.
The up-tempo song, whose lyrics focus on a relationship is somewhat reminiscent of Suede's biggest selling single "Trash".
"Obsessions" is a fan favourite of the later Suede and is notable as the only song from A New Morning that Suede performed at their 2010 reunion gigs. It was also the only addition from A New Morning to appear on the 2010 compilation The Best of Suede.

Elton John - Tiny Dancer

The lyrics were written by Bernie Taupin, John's writing partner.
The "Blue jean baby, LA Lady, seamstress for the band" sure sounds it's Maxine Feibelmann, who was Bernie Taupin's girlfriend when he wrote the song and who became his first wife in 1971. She traveled with the band on their early tours, often sewing together the costumes and fixing their clothes. Plus, on the Madman Across The Water album, it says, "With love to Maxine" under the credits for this song. Elton John even said at one point that Bernie wrote it about his girlfriend.

Well, Taupin says that the song was not about Maxine. Here's the story he tells: "We came to California in the fall of 1970, and sunshine radiated from the populace. I was trying to capture the spirit of that time, encapsulated by the women we met - especially at the clothes stores up and down the Strip in L.A. They were free spirits, sexy in hip-huggers and lacy blouses, and very ethereal, the way they moved. So different from what I'd been used to in England. And they all wanted to sew patches on your jeans. They'd mother you and sleep with you - it was the perfect Oedipal complex."

Simple Plan - Summer Paradise

This song was inspired by Bouvier's hobby of surfing, which is an important part of his life. He told Buzznet: "I've spent a lot of time out there when the surf is not that great and you're waiting for a wave, just sitting on the water seeing dolphins and seals go by, taking in a beautiful sunset. I think about music a lot and have probably thought about some lyrics out there. Also this song called "Summer Paradise" on the album has got that beautiful vibe that I can probably attribute to going on surf trips."

Richard Cheese - Rock The Casbah

Richard Cheese and Lounge Against the Machine specialize in playing lounge-style arrangements of popular rock, metal and hip hop songs, sung in a croony traditional swing vocal style, contrasting an elegant jazz treatment of the music with often profane and ribald lyrics to create a humorous dissonance.

Dire Straits - Sultans Of Swing

Group leader Mark Knopfler got the idea for song this from watching a lousy club band perform. As the story goes, Knopfler was in Ipswich on a rainy night. He ducked into a bar where a mediocre band was closing out the night to an audience that was maybe four or five drunks unaware of their surroundings. The hapless band ended their set with the lead singer announcing, with no apparent irony, "Goodnight and thank you. We are the sultans of swing." Knopfler got a lot of songwriting ideas from observing everyday people, something that got harder to do when he became famous.

Prince Ital Joe feat. Marky Mark - United

Mark Wahlberg is known as a famous actor, but in the early nineties he began his career as a rapper under the name of Marky Mark. In 1994 he teamed up with reggae singer Prince Ital Joe and they released an album named Life In The Streets. Life in the Streets was not released in the United States, but was a huge success in Germany, the song United held the #1 position for weeks.

Magna Cum Laude - Pálinka dal

Magna Cum Laude is a pop band very popular in Hungary, their lyrics are loaded with emotions, the songs characterized by unusually simple, clever lyrics and fine tones.
His one is not an emotional song, it's about the love of pálinka, the special Hungarian alcoholid drink.

Daughtry - One Last Chance

This is a song from the "Leave This Town: The B-Sides" EP, which was released first only on iTunes. One year leater a physical version of the EP was released including one additional unreleased song.

Limp Bizkit - Gold Cobra

Prior to the recording of Gold Cobra, Kerrang! magazine asked Fred Durst what he's been inspired by lyrically. He replied: "My inevitably tortured mind. Living the life that I'm living, it's all very inspiring. I'm quite a sponge. I absorb all types of energy and I'm a very sensitive person. There isn't anything that doesn't inspire me in life so the songs run a whole range of thoughts and feelings."

Flogging Molly - Speed Of Darkness

This song was inspired by the experiences of Dino Misetic, the artist who did the CD cover for the album, growing up in the Balkans during the Bosnian War between 1992-1995. Frontman Dave King explained to Alternative Press magazine: "His dad was telling us about how fast war came to the country and how bad it got, so quickly. He showed us a book that Dino was quoted in as a kid, called Sarajevo Marlboro [by Miljenko Jergovic], and [Dino] said, 'In school, they taught us about the speed of light, but they never told us what the speed of darkness is.' It happened so quickly, how things changed and the whole downturn happened—I think an apt title for what we're all about. The war was a devastating time for people. The line from the song, 'We set our course for Americ-ay'—literally, Dino and his family put a backpack on and made it to the United States."

 

Cher - If I Could Turn Back Time

This was written by Diane Warren, who has also written songs for Aretha Franklin, Celine Dion ("Because You Loved Me), Barbara Streisand, Tina Turner and Whitney Houston.

The music video was filmed on board the USS Missouri while it was stationed at the former Long Beach Naval Shipyard at Pier D along with the crew. Cher recalled to Q magazine: December 2013: "The 'If I Could Turn Back Time' video we shot for days. There was a whole story – I climbed up stuff, I was running away from a lover. I was in a cage, in a speedboat... And when the director got to the edit, he just said, 'F this, here's the money (shot)' – me on the battleship with the sailors. They were real sailors too. They were funny. They kept calling me 'ma'am.'"

Cher - Believe

Many great songs were written and recorded very quickly in short bursts of inspiration. This wasn't one of them. About 6 years in the making, this song was the result of the painstaking efforts of 6 songwriters and at least 3 producers attempting to create a massive hit for Cher. 

The big breakthrough in the production of this song was the distinctive vocal effect, which the producers claimed was done using a Vocoder device. It was later revealed that they used an Auto-Tune processor, which is a device created by Antares Audio Technologies to correct the pitch in recorded vocals. Rap groups were experimenting with the Vocoder sound, resulting hits like "Intergalactic" and "California Love," but this was the first hit Pop song to use these techniques. The following year, Eiffel 65 had a huge vocoder hit with "Blue (Da Ba Dee)."

David Cook - Fade Into Me

This sweeping power-waltz finds Cook singing of being made whole by love. The singer penned the song with Better Than Ezra's Kevin Griffin and Jamie Houston, whose credits include the High School Musical hit,"Breaking Free."

 

Cook discussed the song's meaning in an interview with Billboard magazine: "It's talking about basically giving yourself completely to another person and that moment when you and me become us. But I've seen it interpreted as little more of a sexual innuendo song, which I think is funny. But to me, I guess, it's a little more delicate than that."

 

 

David Cook - Light On

This power ballad was penned by former Soundgarden and Audioslave vocalist Chris Cornell along with Brian Howes, who has written for Daughtry, Hinder and Puddle of Mudd. Rob Cavallo, who is best known for his work with Green Day and Kid Rock, produced the track.

David Cook first came across this song after he did a version of Cornell's cover of Billie Jean on American Idol. Cook told MTV News what happened next: "Chris went into the media and said some really, really nice things. And this song actually got pitched to us, which I take as another huge compliment, the fact that he saw something in me with a song of his. Just the fact that somebody of his caliber takes the time out of their day not just to mention my name, but to say something nice, it's kind of out of this world."

Brad Paisley Feat. Carrie Underwood - Remind Me

Paisley told Taste of Country Carrie was the first person he called to sing with him on the song. He said: "I think we've become really close, having toured together and become friends and co-hosting the CMAs for several years. We just get along great and sing great together. She's probably pretty much my first choice to sing with when it comes to a duet with a woman like that. I mean, we just sort of share the same values and get along that well. And also, I just don't think there's a better singer than her, so it's sort of selfish to be able to sing with her and perform. Every take sounded like that [the final recording]."

Breaking Benjamin - Breath

This was the band's fourth charted song on the U.S. Hot 100 overall, and the second from Phobia. Although "Breath" failed to capture to pop success of The Diary of Jane at #50 where "Breath" hit #84 on the Billboard Hot 100, it was more successful on the rock charts where it hit #1 on the US Mainstream Rock Tracks chart, making it Breaking Benjamin's first number-one hit staying there for seven weeks where "The Diary of Jane" hit #2 and it also hit #3 on the US Modern Rock Tracks chart tying with So Cold as their highest-charting single on the chart where "The Diary of Jane" hit #4.

Breaking Benjamin - The Diary Of Jane

This song is about a guy who loved a girl, but he finds out that she never loved him back, hence: "I'll still try and find my place in the diary of Jane."
The single moved rapidly up the charts in its first week of official release, debuting on the Billboard Hot 100 at #55, making it the fastest added single ever in the history of Hollywood Records.

 

Bowling For Soup - Here's Your Freakin' Song

A funny song from the seventh album of Bowling For Soup. The album was recorded over a three week span in June 2010.

3 Doors Down - Time Of My Life

Frontman Brad Arnold said in an interview, “I think what makes Time of My Life different from our previous works is just the fact that we went into the studio with a goal, and that goal was to make a bigger, better record that we have ever made before. I think our experience helped a lot with reaching our goal, and this album exemplifies the whole statement of having the time of our lives".

Vertical Horizon - Heart In Hand

This is my favourite song on Vertical Horizon's second album Running On Ice. Though still technically a duo and acoustic based, Running On Ice featured many guest musicians (most notably Carter Beauford of the Dave Matthews Band on drums).

Lenny Kravitz - Are You Gonna Go My Way

This is about Jesus Christ, whom Lenny referred to as "The Ultimate Rock Star." It's about how God gives choice to man about where to turn.
In an interview posted on his website, Kravitz said: "We were just jamming in the studio. You know, I was jamming with Craig Ross, who I wrote the song with. It was one of those songs that happened in 5 minutes. We were jamming. I thought there was something happening. I told Henry to turn the tape machines on, and we played it. And that was it. And then I went and wrote the lyrics on a brown paper bag, I remember at my loft on Broome Street at the time. Went in and sang it the next day. And that was it."

INXS - Need You Tonight

Andrew Farriss (guitar and keyboards) had the idea for the riff for this song while waiting for a taxi to take him to the airport. He asked the taxi driver to wait for a couple of minutes as he'd left something behind in the motel. He kept the unfortunate taxi driver waiting for an hour while he quickly recorded the riff and eventually returned to a very frustrated driver with a tape.

Mr. Big - Wild World

This is a cover of a Cat Stevens song originally released in 1970. Stevens later recalled to Mojo: "It was one of those chord sequences that's very common in Spanish music. I turned it around and came up with that theme--which is a recurring theme in my work--which is to do with leaving, the sadness of leaving, and the anticipation of what lies beyond."
Mr. Big released their cover in 1993 which is their second most popular song after "To Be With You".

Coldplay - Christmas Lights

Mat Whitecross directed the video for the song, which was filmed at the South Bank of River Thames in London. The band are seen performing the song on a small theater-inspired stage with red velvet curtains. "The idea for the video was like a magical, surreal theater show with loads of tricks packed in," frontman Chris Martin said.

A trio of Elvis Presley impersonators are seen playing violins - they are the band's former manager Phil Harvey, Tim Crompton, the frontman of Coldplay support act The High Wire and comic actor Simon Pegg.

The words above the stage curtain in the video say CREDO ELVEM ETIAM VIVERE. This means "I believe Elvis lives" in Latin.

3 Doors Down - When You're Young

Lead singer Brad Arnold wrote the song with Aerosmith and Def Leppard producer Marti Frederiksen. Arnold explained to Artist Direct what the song means to him: "So many times, older people look at young kids and say, 'Enjoy this time! It's the best time of your life,' when it's really not. Being young is hard. Everything's in front of you for the first time. Those things that are in front of you seem so much bigger than they do when you're looking back on them. Csík Zenekar is a band playing Hungarian traditional music. Lovasi András is the singer of the most popular alternative band in Hungary, Kispál és a Borz. They met and Csík zenekar made a cover of one of the Kispál és a Borz songs. So the voice and the words are the same, but the music is different, great cover!

Daughtry - Life After You

MSN asked frontman and main songwriter Chris Daughtry why with all his success he doesn't sound on top of the world. He replied: "I think just for myself as a songwriter, it's easier to write about something that's either hurting you at the time or just a really bad experience that you remember. It's always way more inspiring than a good day. Because when I'm having a good day, the last thing I want to do is sit down and write about it, you know... and, honestly, no one wants to hear that crap. I think everybody tends to think it's about a relationship every time, and it's not always the case. There's other inner struggles; [it] doesn't always have to be a girl. I think a lot of people always go to that place instantly. And then there's other times they hear the songs and go 'Oh my God, I hope that Chris and [Daughtry's wife] Deanna are doing OK.' And, yes, for the record, yes, we're fine."

Disturbed - The Animal

This is the lightest track on Asylum. The song is about someone who turns into a werewolf under the light of the full moon and was inspired by movies such as Underworld and Wolfman.

Japanese-American model, actress and former WWE Diva Lena Yada appears in the song's music video. She married Disturbed's frontman David Draiman on September 25, 2011.

 

 

Brandon Flowers - Only The Young

This youth-hymn is the second single by The Killers frontman Brandon Flowers, from his debut studio album, Flamingo. The song was produced by Stuart Price, who was also the man behind the desk on The Killers third record, Day & Age.

Flowers told MSN Music: "That was the song I had the most reservations about even though I think it could be the best song on the album - it's the most different song. It's the only one that's got sequenced drums - everything else is live drums."

OneRepublic - Secrets

Since the band's debut release in 2007, the band's frontman Ryan Tedder has achieved international success penning hit songs for artists such as Leona Lewis, Kelly Clarkson and Beyoncé. On this song Tedder looks at the pressure of topping previous songwriting successes. He explained to iProng Magazine: "The whole idea is the person, the 'artist' saying I don't really trust my own flow, I don't trust my own delivery in writing, so tell me what you want to hear. This song is basically asking the audience, what do you want me to do? It's kind of an interesting song. The song slips back and forth between insecurity and total confidence, insecurity, total confidence, which is to me the life of the artist."

Neon Trees - Animal

This is the lead single from their debut album Habits. Glenn, who is the band's lyricist, told The Examiner that the story behind the song is simple, "I'm a masochist in love," he explained. "I seem to require pain. But in general when humans are in love we're like animals."

This song reached #1 on Billboard Alternative Songs in its 32nd chart week, completing the lengthiest journey to the peak position since the tally's inception in 1988. The song's lengthy climb overtook the 31-week ascension to the top by Phoenix's "1901."

Sound Off peaked at #14 on the Active Rock Charts after debuting at #44, peaked at #33 on the U. S. Rock Charts after debuting at #50, and peaked at #16 on the Hot Mainstream Rock Tracks.

Adam Lambert - Whataya Want From Me

This new-wave-ish ballad was penned by Pink, along with Swedish hitmakers Max Martin and Johan Shellback. It was originally earmarked for Pink's Funhouse album, but didn't make it onto the record.

Lambert recalled to The Hollywood Reporter: "I recorded 'Whataya Want From Me' on a day off from the Idols Live Arena tour and I was pretty wiped out due to the show schedule. I knew the song would be a key track on my album and it was my first time working with the incredible Max Martin and Shellback, so I was a bit apprehensive. The vocal ad libs at the end were the most challenging as they are quite high and it had been a long day. When I heard the first mix, I felt really confident the song would have success thanks to the flawless production."

 

The Script - Breakeven

Frontman Danny O'Donoghue admitted to The Daily Star July 30, 2008: "Our songs are from therapy sessions. One track called 'Break Even' is about how someone is always left with the lesser piece in life. The worst day for him would be his girlfriend's best day."

The Rasmus - In The Shadows

The best song of the Finnish band The Rasmus. It is featured on the group's fifth studio album Dead Letters. The song currently holds the record for performance royalties received abroad on a Finnish composition (overtaking the works of Jean Sibelius). It was nominated for the Kerrang! Award for Best Single in 2004.

Lady Antebellum - Need You Now

This is the first single from Country trio Lady Antebellum's sophomore album. Group members Dave Haywood, Charles Kelley and Hillary Scott, along with co-writer Josh Kear wrote this song about yearning for companionship in the middle of the night. Scott explained in publicity materials that the song, and many others on their sophomore album, "are about what we are learning as we go through the ups and downs of different relationships." She added: "All three of us know what it's like to get to that point where you feel lonely enough that you make a late night phone call that you very well could regret the next day. But you do it anyway because it's the only thing that's going to give you any relief in that moment."

Linkin Park - Waiting For The End

Linkin Park's Chester Bennington told MTV News that this is one of his favorite tracks on A Thousand Suns. He said: "I think that 'Waiting for the End' and 'Iridescent' are probably tied at #1 [for my] favorite song on the record. I just think they're really beautiful." He added: "I like the summertime vibe of 'Waiting,' and I like the lyrical content of it all, and the dynamic, too."

Tom Jones - She's A Lady

"She's a Lady" is a million-selling gold-certified hit song written by Paul Anka, released at the beginning of 1971. In the United States, it is Jones' highest-charting single to date. It hit #1 in Cash Box magazine and #2 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. The original version of the song was re-written for commercial release in 1971 by Jones and Anka due to the explicit lyrics.

Tom Jones - It's Not Unusual

This song was written by the classical music arranger and conductor Les Reed along with Tom Jones' manager Gordon Mills. They wrote it for the British singer Sandie Shaw, but she turned it down. Tom Jones saw the song's potential, recorded it, and it became his first hit single. Jones recalled to The Mail On Sunday February 6, 2011: "I did the demo on this song when it was being offered to Sandie Shaw. I was just starting out and, God bless her, she said: 'Whoever's singing this, it's his song.' Finding great new songs is never easy, and back in those days, finding one that would fit me – the way I felt and sang anyway – was difficult. I'm indebted to Sandie for being so generous."

The Blue Hearts - Train Train

The Blue Hearts were a Japanese punk rock band active from 1985 to 1995. In 2003, HMV Japan ranked them at number 19 on their list of 100 most important Japanese pop acts. They have been compared to such bands as the Sex Pistols, The Clash and the Ramones. Two of their most well-known are "Train-Train" and "Linda Linda", which can be found on many karaoke machines.

Switchfoot - Meant To Live

This is a song about finding fulfillment through God. The lyrics talk about imperfection of the world we live in, and why people were "Meant to live for so much more." This song is a highlight of an ongoing theme of Switchfoot, which is that the nihilism and entropy people feel in everyday life is due to a loss of identity and faith. The lyrics were written by their frontman Jon Foreman, who said in an interview to Songfacts: "I'm thinking of life maybe a little bit more lyrically than a computer programmer or someone like that. But the good songs I always feel like they have very little to do with me."

Sugarcult - Crashing Down

Sugarcult released their debut album, Eleven, in 1999, featuring also this song. Not amongst their best songs but already shows promising signs of the talent these guys have, which later led them to success with songs like Memory.

 

Santana - The Game Of Love (feat. Michelle Branch)

The song was launched as single in 2002, and won a Grammy Award for "Best Pop Collaboration with Vocals", as well as peaking at #5 in on the Billboard Hot 100 singles chart. The vocal performance on the song is by Michelle Branch.
Tina Turner originally recorded the track for Santana, though this version remained unreleased until October 16, 2007, where it featured on Ultimate Santana, with the Branch version also appearing on the effort.

Ryan Adams & The Cardinals - Breakdown Into The Resolve

The Cardinals were an American rock band that were formed in 2004 by alternative country singer-songwriter Ryan Adams and fronted by him until 2009. Regarding the band's name, Adams states that he "suggested the Cardinals because it was my high school football team."

R.E.M. - It's The End Of The World As We Know It (And I Feel Fine)

Explaining this song to Q magazine in 1992, lead singer Michael Stipe said: "The words come from everywhere. I'm extremely aware of everything around me, whether I am in a sleeping state, awake, dream-state or just in day to day life. There's a part in 'It's The End Of The World As We Know It' that came from a dream where I was at Lester Bangs' birthday party and I was the only person there whose initials weren't L.B. So there was Lenny Bruce, Leonid Brezhnev, Leonard Bernstein... So that ended up in the song along with a lot of stuff I'd seen when I was flipping TV channels. It's a collection of streams of consciousness."

Stereophonics - Traffic

"Traffic" is the fourth single from Stereophonics, it is taken from their debut album Word Gets Around and was released in October 1997. It reached #20 on the UK Singles Chart.

Shinedown - Sound Of Madness

This rant about self-involved drama queens was chosen to be the album's title track after some road testing on a short run of dates.

The album was produced by multiple Grammy Award winner Rob Cavallo (Kid Rock, Green Day, My Chemical Romance).

This topped the Mainstream Rock chart. It was the third single from The Sound of Madness, following "Devour" and "Second Chance" to top that tally. Shinedown were the first act to collect three Mainstream #1s from an album since Three Days Grace from One-X in 2006-07.

Keane - She Has No Time

This song was written by Tim Rice-Oxley (piano) for Tom Chaplin (vocals). Tom had a crush on this one girl, that just didn't seem to care about him. So Tim, the good friend he is, wanted to help him out, so he wrote this song for him.

K's Choice - Dad

In 1993 the band had five more or less permanent members: Sarah and Gert Bettens, Jan van Sichem, Jr. (guitar), Bart Van Der Zeeuw (drums) and Erik Verheyden (bass). These five toured Germany and the United States in support of the Indigo Girls. When they learned of another group in the U.S. named The Choice, they changed their name in order to avoid legal problems; they decided upon "K's Choice" by going through the alphabet to see which letter would sound best in front of the word choice. Since they thought they needed a story behind the new name, they used to tell that the K referred to Joseph K. from Kafka's the Trial, but later the band revealed the arbitrariness of choosing the "K".

Imogen Heap - Can't Take It In

In late 2005, Heap was asked to write a track for the soundtrack of The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe entitled "Can't Take It In", when a track that fellow Brit singer Dido submitted was deemed unfitting. Heap's track is played at the end of the film in an orchestral version produced by Heap and Harry Gregson Williams, who scored the movie.

Hole - Teenage Whore

Courtney Love wrote this song about how she supported herself by working as a striper in Portland, Oregon. "When I was a teenage whore, my mother asked me baby what bores?" and "Baby why you are teenage whore?" are two simple verses that explain how the relation between Courtney Love and her mother, Linda Carroll, was not good. Love was sent to a youth correctional facility by her mother, and she stayed there until she was 16.

Seabird - Falling For You

Seabird is an American alternative rock band from Independence, Kentucky. The band formed when Aaron Morgan, Micah Landers, and Aaron Hunt began playing songs with each other in 2004. The band soon added accordion player David Smith. After playing together for a little under a year both Landers and Smith left to pursue other interests. Soon after Chris Kubik joined the band to take the place of Landers on bass and Morgan began playing two keyboards to make up for the loss of the accordion. After adding Morgan’s brother (Ryan) to play guitar, the band recorded their debut EP in one of the band members' rooms.

Robbie Williams - Supreme

Williams had to fight to become a solo artist. His contract with Take That prevented him from releasing solo material until the group dissolved. Newspapers and talk shows in the UK chronicled his journey to go solo. He was constantly photographed hanging out with other popular artists like Oasis and George Michael. He finally cut his ties with Take That in 1996 but had to pay the group $200,000 in lost commission to do so.

Robbie Williams - Feel

At 16, Williams became the youngest member of Take That. His mother encouraged him to try out for the group after seeing an ad in the local newspaper. He performed on hits with the band but constantly argued with Nigel Martin-Smith, the band's manager, about his lack of creative input. These arguments led to the beginning of Williams' long battle with drug and alcohol abuse.

Robbie Williams - Angels

Williams had previously been a member of boy band Take That, but quit the group in 1995. His solo career had stalled until this song was released on Christmas 1997. The main songwriter and fronton of Take That was Gary Barlow. His solo career started well, (his song "Love Won't Wait" being co-written with Madonna), but it soon dried up, which is sort of the opposite of what happened to Williams. Barlow went on to become a professional songwriter and wrote songs for other artists.

There was a lot of press rivalry with Williams and the Gallagher brothers from Oasis, one of their more printable insults of Williams being "That fat dancer from Take That". Many Britpop fans felt that "Angels" was an attempt to cash in on the then huge Britpop craze by writing a mainstream song in a similar style.

Heaven Street Seven - Ez a szerelem

During the summer of 1995, sound engineer Bernhard Hahn from Stuttgart offered a helping hand to the band, and together they worked together on HS7’s debut album Tick Tock No Fear. The album was made independently, and released privately, as the band did not yet have a recording deal. Around this time the band starts to play their first “serious” gigs. The band is born!

"Ez a szerelem" was released almost ten years later, in 2004.

Heaven Street Seven - Mozdulj

After several years of planning, and playing acoustic teahouse gigs, as well as several ametuer demo recordings made in the girls showers at the college, the band known as Heaven Street Seven came into being in 1995 in Hungary. The founding members of the band are Krisztián Szucs and Robert Németh, who were college classmates in the city of Esztergom. Soon Gyula Orbán and Endre Kiss joined the band as well (both former members of the Paks based band Houdinis).
